Make the resource worth the request

A lead magnet page offers a useful resource in exchange for a contact action. The fictional Field Notes example is a guide request. Your page should describe a real resource that is ready to deliver.

A narrow checklist, worksheet, or worked example is easier to explain than a broad “ultimate guide.” State who it helps, what problem it addresses, and what someone can do after using it. Include an excerpt or preview so visitors can judge the value before submitting.

Choose how delivery works

There are three common flows: an ungated download link, a form followed by a resource link, or a form followed by an email sent through an external workflow. Choose the simplest one that meets your purpose.

Explain the exchange clearly

Ask for email and only the extra fields you will use. Do not bundle an unclear ongoing newsletter promise into a resource request. Describe the intended communications and configure consent according to your requirements.

Review the resource as well as the page

Open the file from a signed-out browser. Check that a visitor does not need access to your private drive or workspace. Verify the mobile reading experience and any links inside the resource. A polished landing page cannot compensate for a broken download.

If you update the file later, keep its URL stable where possible or update the page and automation together. Remove expired offers from both places.

Decide what success means

Downloads show interest in the resource, which may differ from interest in your paid service. Review whether recipients fit your intended audience and whether the next step is useful to them.
