**The short answer.** A hosted subdomain can be a practical starting point; an owned hostname gives the business more control over its address. Connecting a Pageree custom domain keeps the hosted URL working, so preferred URLs and any old-address redirects need separate planning.

## Choose an address you can maintain

A hosted subdomain gives a landing page a public address under the hosting provider's domain. A custom domain uses a hostname you control, such as `launch.example.com`. Both can serve a useful page. Choose based on ownership, brand continuity, and your ability to manage the connection rather than expecting a domain purchase to create an automatic ranking advantage.

Pageree publishes a page on a hosted subdomain first. An owned custom hostname can then be attached after the page is published. The hosted address continues working, so connecting the domain adds an address; it is not automatically a redirect or a complete search migration.

## Compare the practical differences

| Consideration | Hosted subdomain | Custom hostname |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Initial setup | Use the returned published address | Add the returned DNS record and verify status |
| Brand presentation | Includes the provider's domain | Uses a domain controlled by the business |
| Ownership | Provider controls the parent domain | You manage registration and DNS access |
| Continuity | Address is tied to the hosting service | Can be pointed to another host if you manage a move |
| Operations | Fewer DNS decisions | Renewals, DNS, and certificate status need attention |
| Search | Still needs useful content and crawlability | Still needs useful content and crawlability |

For an early offer test, the hosted address can be enough to show a reviewed page and collect initial enquiries. For a longer-lived public campaign, an owned hostname may make the page easier to recognize and preserve across hosting changes. Neither choice fixes an unclear offer or a broken form.

## Pick the exact hostname deliberately

`example.com`, `www.example.com`, and `launch.example.com` are separate hostnames. Consider whether the business already has a website at the root. A dedicated subdomain can avoid replacing that site while you run a focused campaign.

Connect the exact hostname you own. Pageree returns the DNS record to use; do not guess its target. Apex connections depend on the DNS provider's support for the required flattening or ALIAS behavior. In your own Cloudflare DNS account, follow Pageree's DNS-only instruction for this connection. The [custom-domain guide](https://pageree.com/guides/ai-landing-page-custom-domain/) explains the setup and HTTPS checks.

Keep registration and DNS access in an account the business can retain. A domain registered personally by a departing contractor can create a continuity problem even when the page itself is easy to rebuild. Record who owns renewal, DNS changes, and website access.

## Plan for two working addresses

Once both the hosted URL and custom hostname serve the page, choose the preferred public address. Align the page's canonical URL, internal links, social-sharing metadata, and campaign destinations with that choice. A canonical is a signal about the preferred URL, not a promise that every search engine will choose it.

If you are moving an established page from an old address, check what the old host can actually do. Google's [site-move guidance](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/crawling-indexing/site-move-with-url-changes) covers URL mapping, redirects, and monitoring. Pageree's domain-connection tool does not by itself create redirects from every old URL or give you control over another provider's domain.

Do not turn off a working old destination before confirming the replacement and its enquiry flow. Check any external links you can update, webmaster verification, and the canonical on the final page. Monitor the move rather than assuming the address change is invisible to visitors or search engines.

## Copy this domain-choice prompt

```text
Help choose the public address for my landing page.
Business domain I own: [exact domain, or none].
Existing website: [URL and what it does].
Campaign duration and audience: [context].
Current page URL: [known URL]. DNS access: [provider/access].
Compare the hosted address with an exact custom hostname that
preserves my existing website. Explain setup, ownership, and
continuity. Do not promise a ranking boost or invent a DNS target.
If a domain is chosen, publish the reviewed page first and use
the returned connection instructions. Explain canonical and old-URL
handling separately; do not assume redirects are configured.
```

## Verify before updating campaign links

Open the final HTTPS address, inspect its page content, and send a clearly marked form test. Confirm that the exact hostname you intend to advertise is active. If the hosted page works but the custom address fails, follow the [domain diagnostic](https://pageree.com/guides/landing-page-domain-troubleshooting/).

Use the [SEO checklist](https://pageree.com/guides/landing-page-seo-checklist/) to review canonical and discovery settings. Then update the business's own links deliberately so visitors and search engines see a consistent preferred address.
